Girls Varsity Basketball · Ontario Continues Making History With First Playoff Win In 15 Years

Ontario, CA- February 15, 2018: The Ontario Jaguars kept the magical season alive and continued to make even more history by winning the first girls basketball playoff game in 15 seasons. After a sluggish start that saw them trailing by a score of 6-12 at the midway point of the 1st quarter, they turned on the jets. Propelled by an 18-6 run in the 2nd quarter, Ontario never looked back on their way to a 27-57 victory.

Having the game at Ontario was a rare sight because Ontario has not hosted a playoff game in over a decade. The game was in the opening round of the CIF Division 4AA playoffs.

“We definitely needed to start that game better but I’m happy about the way they finished” said Head Coach Chris Emami. When asked about winning a playoff game and how far this team can go, “we don’t look at all the outside stuff. Our method has always been to look at who is the next team in front of us and what we need to do to beat them”.

Leading the way for Ontario was Kyra Williams with 20. “She really stepped up in this game. I am very proud of her effort on both ends of the ball” said Coach Chris.

Jazzlyn Johnson had a strong game with 16 points. Coach Chris had this to say about her, “She is going to command a lot of attention from the defense and she did a great job of not trying to do too much”.

Besides the leading scorers the following people scored for Ontario: Julianna Sanchez had 9 points, Stephania Franco had 4 points, Ariana Fealofai had 2 points, Maya Davis had 4 points, and Clarissa Pineda had 2 points.

Ontario is 26-2 on the season and now advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the CIF Division 4AA Playoffs against La Sierra (Riverside). “They are a solid team and we need to do a lot in the next 48 hours to prepare for them” said Coach Chris.

The La Sierra game is scheduled for Saturday February 17th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM at Ontario High School.
